The Society for Security Policy and Arms Control

The sustainment of peace and freedom in international politics is the mission of security policy. The international system has been marked by a number of dramatic conflicts since the end of the Cold War. The endurement of peace and freedom is continually endangered in such a world. History shows that as long as political conflicts exist, freedom can only be retained by effective security policy, whereas positive peace can only exist in political freedom. By means of this interrelation it becomes evident that questions of security policy have to be discussed and analysed with intensive attention and much dedication. The complex interrelationships, the types of conflicts and how they are carried out and military systems with their correlated strategical characteristics are often mentioned too briefly in this discussion.

In light of this background the Society for Security Policy and Arms Control was founded in Kiel in 1981. Its purpose is to be informative about problems of security in international politics and to effectively support scientific researchers through a scholarship program and in turn to build a network of experts on topics of security policy. Furthermore, the Society supports the work of the Institute of Security Policy at the University of Kiel. The board of directors is comprised of a chairman, a deputy chairman, a treasurer and a secretary. The director of the Institute for Security Policy at the University of Kiel is a member of the board by virtue of his position. The Society is a registered association by the district court in Kiel and is recognized as a non-profit organization.
